in consequence of the missive, Mrs Ferrars, penned by BarbaraB
Even before the engagement is revealed, it struck me that Mrs. Ferrars also favours Fanny extremely. John was telling Elinor how, on the one hand, Mrs.Ferrars would give Edward 1000-a-year if he married Miss Morton. With Miss Morton's 30,0000, that would be another 1500 a year. John and Fanny must have quadruple that, at least, because the Norland estate is 4000 a year and in Henry Dashwood's opinion, it was not that important to John considering the income he already had from his mother's fortune.
But Mrs. Ferrars hands Fanny 200 pounds of pocket money? A fifth of what would give Edward for a whole year? To me, this 1000 a year, even after he married Miss Morton (if he did) would mean she was still keeping a tight rein on him so she could control him.
The line about proportioning her words to her ideas is one of the many LOL! lines in the chapters for this week.
