Villainy in the Brandon family   Written by Glenn (10/2/2009 12:07 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, She was going to be married to CB's brother for her money, penned by Graciela
Are you new?

It has been 9 years since I first read Sense and Sensibility. I had forgotten how rotten Col. Brandon's father and brother were. The adaptation I most often watch, S&S2, alters the story here. Mrs. Jennings tells the first part of Col. Brandon's sad story concerning Eliza Williams but Emma Thompson chose to make Eliza poor, not rich. She also omitted her loveless marriage to the elder brother. I was shocked to read this passage. I now consider Col. Brandon's father and brother to be worse than John Dashwood and possibly in the same territory as Austen's rogues gallery.

I have no knowledge of Regency law, but I wonder if Col. Brandon could have gone to the authorities and revealed the forced marriage. What protection did a ward have? When a ward inherited money, there must have been more than one guardian who wished to steal it.
