Maybe he thought he should have brought her to Delaford when he inherited it. But that would have caused its own set of problems, because all the neighbhors would know who she was and it might be harder for her to fit in or find a husband.

After all, in Chapter 30, Mrs. Jennings calls her a love child and says she may be 'prenticed out. I thought that was kind of harsh. I was thinking Eliza might fare better in being a kind of Harriet Smith.
