Edward wasn't really aware that Elinor was in love, seeing that she could govern those feelings of hers.

So staying on at Norland was perhaps more of a torture for Edward.
I think Elinor subconsciously knows that Edward might not have been aware of her feelings while she as a very good observer could see his and let her governed ones be guided by his.
