Julie's well-researched post from our L&T archives below, quoting both the law of the time in England and one of JA's own letters, makes it clear that duelling was regarded as a much more serious matter than this.

In the letter Julie quotes, JA writes to her sister that someone they know was wounded accidentally and was most anxious to have ot proved that the wound was accidental and not as the result of a duel. JA herself did not seem to think this would just involve a 'slap on the wrist'.
