If only Marianne could have looked past the superficial...   Written by Divya (9/29/2009 9:05 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Colonel Brandon: A Dashing Figure?, penned by BarbaraB
Are you new?

I loved reading your post, Barbara, because it shows plainly what Marianne has not acknowledged: the Colonel, in his own unassuming way, is perhaps a truer romantic hero (and, dare I say, a better match for her) than Willoughby. I'm reminded of Elizabeth Bennet's realization in P&P that one man "has got all the goodness, and the other all the appearance of it."

Clearly Marianne has yet to learn the meaning of the expression "Still waters run deep" as regards the Colonel, or even her own sister, for that matter. Still, she is young, and maybe hearing the story of the two Elizas will make her respect the Colonel more.
