I think what he's saying is that at the time, he wished she could have held on and waited for him, but now he understands why she did it, (he mentions misery and great unkindness) and if his brother had been good to her, he would have gotten over it.

So I think his feelings of a mixture of being sorry that she was inconstant, but understanding the perverse circumstances that divided them.

I wonder how long Brandon's father would have kept them apart if she had resisted for longer?
