BarbaraB: I love your insightful, well-organized posts! My second run through S&S has been a revelation into why Miss Austen's works are so admired, scrutinized, and studied.

You have uncovered another ironic twist: Young, handsome Willoughby comes on strong and quickly runs out of gas. Thoughtful and dignified Col Brandon hardly comes on at all to begin with but it looks like he will end up with plenty left in his tank.

Marianne is not even aware of his virtues yet but I think his gallantry and true character will soon be patiently unfolded in front of the object of his great desire
