Would this have been an alternative to Marianne   Written by kathleen (elder) (9/29/2009 6:29 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Calling cards, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

writing to Willougyby?

I've often wondered if there were another way that Marianne could have let Willoughby know that she was in town, other than to write him a note. Of course, she wanted to let him know immediately so that she could see him as soon as possible -- but would it have been acceptable behaviour for a single woman (or two single women) to have left their cards at Willoughby's London digs?

Obviously, Marianne & Elinor did not leave cards at Willoughby's place, nor did Mrs Jennings, but I wonder what the protocol might have been. Evidently the Middletons didn't do so either -- Sir John happened to meet Willoughby and invited him to their house for the evening party.
