I had forgotten that not being gaunt and a little flesh on one was considered becoming (boy, wish that were the case nowadays!)

Mr. Palmer is a bit like John Thorpe in Northanger Abbey, me thinks. The bluster and the pomp and circumstance and the criticizing everything.
