|Mrs. Dashwood and Edward

in consequence of the missive, I like Edward!, penned by Barb JA
The conversations begins as Mrs. Dashwood tells Edward, "you would be a happier man if you had any profession to engage your time and give an interest to your plans and actions..." I was surprised that Mrs. Dashwood would be so untactful as to bring this up.
Edward's response is to go through a list of professions he has considered, with reasons why each one was unsuitable for him, and a conclusion that he has made idleness his profession.
Mrs. D then brings up the subject of his future children and his example to them.
I was very uncomfortable with this entire conversation. Am I the only one?
