...for JA's "expectation of happiness" phrase is given in the Cambridge edition as Dr Johnson's Idler, 58 (26th May 1759), which contains the sentence:

Yet it is necessary to hope, tho' hope should always be deluded, for hope itself is happiness, and its frustrations, however frequent, are yet less dreadful than its extinction.

Personally, Barbara, I prefer Elinor's "cheerful pessimism". That way you're never disappointed, but you do run the serious risk of being sometimes pleasantly surprised ;-)
