JA seems to...   Written by Reeba (9/27/2009 11:49 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, That expectation of happiness which is happiness itself, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

philosophise this aspect quite often.

In P&P;
"..... that an event to which she had looked forward with impatient desire, did not, in taking place, bring all the satisfaction she had promised herself."

I think Elinor's attitude results in enjoyment because she apprehends what negative could happen and is unprepared for the pleasure which then bursts upon her when it happens.

OTOH Marianne anticipates only pleasure and falls hard when it doesn't materialize.

More of this philosophy in P&P;
"But here, by carrying with me one ceaseless source of regret in my sister's absence, I may reasonably hope to have all my expectations of pleasure realized. A scheme of which every part promises delight can never be successful; and general disappointment is only warded off by the defence of some little peculiar vexation."

I think Elinor is sensible in this, from personal experience perhaps.

Marianne and especially Mrs Dashwood have too much sensibility to even think about such possibilities.
