We agree about Sir John, basically. I think the difference here is a matter of semantics. You wrote that Sir John can be "thoughtless, and vulgar and not at all sensitive to people's finer feelings." To me that's rather obnoxious. But his heart is in right place, so I like him.
I was specifically thinking of the scene when they were all to go to Whitwell, and Col. Brandon had to leave so suddenly. Sir John's and Mrs. Jennings's pushing of him was rather obnoxious, IMHO. He is their GOOD friend, and they should have let it go and not pushed so hard, when he made it clear he was not to be disuaded. The Colonel seems to me to be a gentleman of good character and breeding, and they ought to have trusted that he would NEVER do such a thing unless it were absolutely necessary.
Once again, this is simply my opinion, for better for for worse. It is such fun to be able to share it, and not feel like I'm WRONG, or perhaps, you're wrong. Thank you, Bridget, thank you RoP Committee, and especially thank you, Barbara for this GR!
