Engagements   Written by Diane DeS (9/26/2009 12:57 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, How can Elinor forgive Edward so quickly?, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

Unfortunately my copy of Jane Austen: The World of Her Novels by Deirdre Le Faye is packed in a box someplace, but I seem to remember reading that in an engagement it was up to the woman to break it off if it was to happen. Men did not break engagements. If they did, they were considered cads (or something very British sounding) and carried the stigma of that action with them for a long time (maybe for life).
