Either way, the way things are for Elinor at the end of Ch. 24, Edward can never be hers--unless Lucy breaks the engagement, which seems impossible right now. I also don't understand why this would make it more acceptable to know in her heart that Edward loves her.

In a way, that makes it worse. If he really did only ever think of her as a friend, she could forgive him for having mistaken his feelings for her. But to deceive someone he loves in that way--I could never be so quick to forgive!
