I assume she thought he was "innocent"   Written by kathleen (elder) (9/25/2009 5:30 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, How can Elinor forgive Edward so quickly?, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

I mean, Elinor didn't think that Edward deliberately set out to deceive her or to break her heart. But he was careless, at best, and to me that's the (nearly) unforgivable part of his behaviour.

And what if Edward didn't actually love Elinor as more than a friend -- would she be able to forgive him then? Her future would be the same in either case, so why would his loving her make any difference in the matter.

It seems not consistent w/ Elinor's other actions/thoughts/feelings.
