Rather strong criticism of a kindly man, I think!   Written by Cathy Allen (9/25/2009 1:59 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Sir John's horror of solitude and quiet, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

I believe that Ms Armstrong is off-base with such strong criticism of Sir John. I agree with Jeffrey, lower down on this thread; Sir John has the gift of hospitality, and he uses it. It's true he can be obnoxious, but his heart is in the right place, so that can be forgiven. (In fact I feel the same way about Mrs. Jennings; I like them both, and readily forgive their excesses, because of the genuine-ness of their actions. If you'll notice, they are sincerely sorry when someone calls them on something.)

I also agree with you, Barbara, that perhaps part of the reason Sir John is so effusive is a response to "compensate for something lacking in his marriage". It would be very difficult for such an effusive person to be married to someone so cold!
