Without wanting to enter   Written by Helen B (9/25/2009 7:16 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, I wondered about this too. Why uneducated?, penned by Trish W.

into comparisons with other Austen novels *cough* P&P *cough*, it may have been that who ever was responsible for raising the Misses Steele was un-educated themselves and saw no benefit in ensuring the girls learned more than the basics. Even the presence of an educated man (or men) in the family may not have helped if the girls simply weren't interested in learning.

Once Lucy had bagged Edward, she believed her future was sorted. Why would she feel the need to improve herself ;)?
