I wondered about this too. Why uneducated?   Written by Trish W. (9/25/2009 3:54 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Uneducated or simply in-educable?, penned by Jeffrey
Are you new?

It seems she has ample opportunity. Her uncle educated Edward for goodness sake. It's not as though she hasn't been exposed to educated people for many years. Edward could have contributed to her ed. by recommending books, a course of study, etc. She is often staying with wealthy families who would own substantial libraries and she has plenty of time on her hands.

I agree with you that she is either uneducated and illiterate by choice, not by circumstance, or perhaps as you say, she is incapable. Learning disabled was not a concept understood at the time. ;-)
