I wonder too about the Norland bit   Written by Barb JA (9/24/2009 9:27 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Lucy isn't stupid, just uneducated, penned by kathleen (elder)
Are you new?

They both know they are rivals.

It's interesting because Lucy mentions her scheme about the Norland living right after this exchange...

"Oh!" cried Miss Steele, looking significantly round at them, "I dare say Lucy's beau is quite as modest and pretty-behaved as Miss Dashwood's."

Elinor blushed in spite of herself. Lucy bit her lip, and looked angrily at her sister. A mutual silence took place for some time.

The only thing I can think is that Lucy perhaps is confident in her own acting ability and doesn't think Elinor is onto her. (doesn't think Elinor knows that Lucy knows Edward was attracted to Elinor). : ) Sorry about the round about explanation. Lucy looking angrily at her sister seems she was trying to hide how much she knew. Maybe that means she was serious about the Norland living. But I'm not sure.
