Charlotte may not be a rocket scientist, but it is less reasonable to blame her for her husband's rudeness than to see her excessive civility as the attempt to atone for it. Why did he marry her? I think we have assumed that her beauty duped him into ignoring her lack of sense & accomplishment--not very impressive penetration.

Here's another idea I have about Charlotte's attractions. To her beauty suppose we add her fortune. To a man with Mr. Palmer's political aspirations, a substantial addition to his warchest along with appealing arm candy for public appearances may have rendered Charlotte iresistable.
