Are you new?

for me they're another sketch of a marriage that society (including themselves) considers successful, suitable, a "good match" but which Our Heroines could not be happy in... they're a reference point, like the Middletons.

They give me perspective on how low society's standards were for judging a marriage happy and successful... as long as the man is rich and the woman is pretty (and fertile!), it's a success.
