I've thought about this, too. Her father died, their nasty sis-in-law and negligent brother took over their home, and they had to move far away from everyone they know, to a place where they're dependent for company on 2 rather silly people and one cold person, and in reduced circumstances. Meeting Willoughby must have seemed like a miracle to an unhappy 17-year old. And to have him snatched away must have really hurt. Yes, she's a bit of a drama queen. But I think her circumstances do add to it.
