A Loser   Written by Robbin (9/20/2009 10:15 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, "fond of low company", penned by Heather Leigh
Are you new?

"I wish, as well as everybody else, to be perfectly happy; but, like everybody else, it must be in my own way. Greatness will not make me so."

Does Edward feel like a loser or just helpless—as Reeba (40223) suggested. If his inability (more unwillingness I think) to fulfill his family’s ambitions makes him feel like a loser then would he not have to believe they were right and he ought to distinguish himself in a “smart” profession or at least drive about town in very knowing gigs. Edward does not agree and seems to be in a kind of war with his mother. He will not do as his mother wishes and she keeps him independent, uncomfortable and helpless to change it but by submission. I think what Edward is most depressed about is his engagement to Lucy. He must regret it a great deal. (:D)
