Her purpose in coming to Barton was to warn Elinor

When Edward was staying with them at Longstaple, it's clear he talked way, way, way more about Elinor than he ought to have done, and said highly favourable things about her, enough to raise a serious alarm in Lucy. Lucy says "I am rather of a jealous temper, too, by nature, and from our different situations in life, from his being so much more in the world than me, and our continual separation, I was enough inclined for suspicion, to have found out the truth in an instant, if there had been the slightest alteration in his behaviour to me when we met, or any lowness of spirits that I could not account for, or if he had talked more of one lady than another, or seemed in any respect less happy at Longstaple than he used to be." Her assertion that he has 'never given her a moment's alarm on that account' is clearly a lie, too. In fact, I think that when she found out he was going to see them at Barton, she gave him that ring with her hair and forced a promise out of him to wear it always, in order to mark her territory before she could get there. Edward is certainly intelligent enough to have hidden it from the Dashwoods, if he had a choice, but too honourable to remove it if he had promised not to. |
