She showed her first suspicious color when she confided to Elinor, someone whom she is not intimately acquainted with, her secret engagement.

She probably meant to tell Elinor about this shocking engagement when she knew that Elinor was being teased on a Mr. F who happened to be Mr. Edward Ferrars.

Also, she keeps on peeking at Elinor's countenance for a change of reaction prior to what she confessed. Is she looking for an angry, jealous, outraged expression? I believe so!
