Wasn't he admitted in a "private education"? I believe that it contributed to this poverty of knowledge in socializing.

Also, he said that: "Shyness is only the effect of a sense of inferiority in some way or other."

Since, (just like Reeba stated, thank you) he was pressured by his family to admit himself to a profession that would provide him a barouche, that lead to a lack of self confidence.
