In Chapter 9, when the Dashwoods are trying to learn what they can about Willoughby after his gallant rescue of Marianne, Sir John tells them how Willoughby visits the area annually. He attends social events while he is visiting, and he also joins in hunting expeditions with the neighborhood men.

I assumed that Willoughby and Brandon were acquainted from Willoughby's previous visits and that some of Willoughby's resentment of Brandon arose from a situation (or more than one situation) occurring during those visits.
