The Steele sisters vs. the Dashwood sisters   Written by kathleen (elder) (9/19/2009 7:51 p.m.)
Are you new?

I often think that Lucy & Anne Steele form a Bizarro world correspondence to Elinor & Marianne Dashwood, respectively. Lucy is intelligent & cool under pressure, while Anne is apt to say the first thing that pops into her head. Anne isn't romantic in the way that Marianne is, but Anne often thinks & speaks about romance itself (and she talks a great deal about beaux!).

But Lucy is cold & calculating, much colder than Marianne thinks that Elinor is, so Elinor is much the more admirable person. And Anne is stupid, not just uneducated, but stupid, so my preference there would obviously be for Marianne, even with her melodramatic tendencies.

Even though Anne is the older of the Steeles, Lucy takes charge. Lucy is also not very nice in correcting Anne, but she knows how to play games with others -- she & Anne both flatter Lady Middleton so well that they are considered indispensable and stay 2 months.
