...that doesn't say much for marriage, does it?

I agree, they're an example of how marriage/family can be a perfect place for people to exercise their tendencies toward selfishness and exclusiveness, giving them "good reasons" to choose not to be empathetic, generous, or concerned with the world outside their little circle.

(Not a thing confined to the 19th-c gentry.)
