|Maybe Elinor thinks her mother should ask

in consequence of the missive, I had never thought of that!, penned by CarolTS
...because Marianne would never suspect their mother of asking such questions as the result of being devoid of feelings herself. Marianne has often made remarks indicating that she believes Elinor has no real deep feelings. Such an accusation could never be leveled at their mother, though.
If Mrs. Dashwood asked, Marianne would take it as being asked out of love and concern rather than a lack of feelings. Elinor, too, would have asked out of love and concern, but it wouldn't be taken that way.
