people being awkward and shy because they were born that way, but I also think that friends are also the result of nature (the way you were born).

Edward has chosen his friends (the Dashwoods) because his nature is unlike his mother and sister. His nature wishes to have some warmth in his relationship regardless of whether they have a name and fortune.

I would be very very depressed if I had a sister and mother like the ones he has.
Getting over them is easier said than done, I think. :-)

Not only do they seem to be pressurizing him into doing something against his nature, but his sister's high handed behaviour with the 3 sisters and their mother must also add to this depression. Helplessness can also be a reason for depression.
