Marianne, the younger, is more like her mother than Elinor. Maybe Jane had her own psychological theories on birth order and the differences between first born, middles and last borns?

The phenomena is also seen in Persuasion in how similar Elizabeth is to Sir Walter.

Edward, to me, seems to have the typical "middle child syndrome."
