...has really taken me by surprise on this read. I had no recollection of her being so much like Marianne - you'd think she would have outgrown it by her ripe old age! (speaking as someone on the wrong side of 40) I'm also having mixed feelings about Lady Middleton - she's insipid and useless, but at least she makes some effort to reign in her husband and mother.

You're absolutely right that these characters are emotionally powerful. When I first read it, knowing nothing about the story when I started, I found myself yelling at the book at a particularly angering part (which we haven't gotten to yet in this GR). That's real power!
