that the conscious intent of Edward & Elinor in their comments is to tease Marianne about her very predictable exercise in appreciation of the picturesque (& thanks for the great primary sources from Gilpin et al). However I still find those images expressive of a sense of depression in these two characters who seem to be falling like leaves & in Edward's case, stuck in the mud. But maybe things will change for them in the upcoming chapters...
