I hadn't seen it as such, but I think you might be right. I think I've been so taken in by the movie adaptations' implications that he was planning to propose that I hadn't been able to ascribe any other possibility to the morning's scheme. Could he really be up to no good to such a degree? This would certainly make me think harder about Elinor's suspicions that there's more going on than meets the eye.
