I agree that they have probably known each other at least 10 years, and quite probably longer.

It's also possible, thought, that Sir John might have been forming parties to go there because he knew Colonel Brandon's brother-in-law (the owner of Whitwell) himself well enough to get admission to the grounds when the owner was not abroad. (It says Sir John was forming the parties, not Colonel Brandon). We don't know how long Colonel Brandon's sister has been married to the owner of Whitwell (at this point in the story).

But, it's very likely that Colonel Brandon was involved in these excursions and knew Sir John back then.
