If Sir John inherited Barton Park from his father, chances are he lived there most of his life right? And the same for Col Brandon. Their estates are only 4 miles apart, so it's possible that they've been friends since childhood. They would have bumped into each other at parties, or had gone to school together. I don't believe Sir John or Brandon ever mention how long they've been friends,or how they met. I think it's only one of the women who mention it.
