But when he sees them together, no matter how he feels about her himself, he has to realize that in order for her to have a second attachment, her first attachment has to end. Whether she will be the one to put an end to it or whether Willoughby would be, it would mean heartbreak either way. Though he may fervently wish to have Marianne for himself, I don't think he's wishing heartbreak on her.

I think it's more wishful thinking out loud than Brandon having any real hope that Marianne could ever be with him.
