PS I messed up that pesky chronology, but   Written by Heather Leigh (9/16/2009 4:14 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, common and dangerous opinions about love, penned by Heather Leigh

So sorry, I was interpreting the Colonel's remarks specifically in light of Willoughby's departure, which (ahem) hasn't happened yet in Ch. 11!

So I would modify my comment to say that even as he witnesses Marianne's happiness WITH Willoughby, the Colonel's imagination is moving forward in time, trying to imagine a future moment in which M would no longer be attached to Willoughby (and thus available to himself), yet without having lost her endearing idealism through disappointment, etc.
