I, too, was annoyed with Marianne, if I remember correctly. I find myself having been annoyed at Marianne, Emma, and Catherine Morland (and I think even Fanny Price) the first time I ever read any of Jane's novels! :D (And perhaps that's why my favorites of Jane's novels have been P&P and Persuasion, since I didn't find the main character annoying...) I didn't read these books when at each character's age (I was slightly older, I believe), and I also was never really was a rebellious teenager (and my passionate stage probably came at the age of 11 and 12, and I got over it by the time I was 16 and 17!) so that I really never related to any of these characters. On first read, I loved Jane's writing because she knew how to show each character's excesses in an amusing way. I do believe I am learning to appreciate Jane even more on the reread due to the fact that I can see she did create accurately depicted (if annoying at first!) characters that truly evolve and mature over the course of her stories. The 20/20 hindsight is perhaps more enjoyable than the first read!
