I also observe that in trying to change the subject, he throws an oblique insult at her, trying to make it appear that she is stating the obvious. If she had taken the bait and gotten defensive, he would have been able to steer the conversation in an entirely different direction. Too bad, Mrs. Jennings is way too smart for that! She sees the barb, deflects it with one sentence and returns to her original point.
