When reading JA I am often sure that I can 'hear' irony in her characters' utterances, but would be at a loss to explain why.

Your final comment, about the rhythm of the "dead leaves" line was most enlightening. I believe you are perfectly right - it's the "said Elinor" pause in the middle that creates the effect. Thank you for pointing it out.

This sort of dissection of the text is so enriching, and one of the reasons why I love GRs.
