On first read, I was too annoyed w/ Marianne   Written by kathleen (elder) (9/16/2009 5:27 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, 20/20 hindsight, penned by Karen G.
Are you new?

to care if Willoughby was a hero or not. I first read the book at age 21, and Marianne just seemed like a silly high school girl -- I wanted to shake and tell her that she needed to grow up already. :-)

I have always liked (& preferred) Elinor, and her story seemed more interesting even though her affection for Edward is not really explained (i.e., we don't get to know Edward very well). I like Marianne better as I get older, but I still don't identify with her overly-romantic, overly-emotional behaviour.

I do think you are right that on first reading it's difficult to know the true character of some of the players -- a bit like real life, I suppose. That's part of why re-reading is so much fun, to see if there were any indications that our first impressions were incorrect.
