I believe both Mrs. Jennings and Lady Middleton mention the fact that they've met him when their associastion with Sir John started (or it might have been Charlotte). So it looks to me like the 2 of them were friends before he married. I think that would give even Sir John enough time to notice more than just the superficial stuff!
