The servant must be behind. Way way behind, I think.

We don't know the exact time gaps here. The time taken to cover the 30 yards, the speed with which the servant may have caught up etc etc.

If the servant was close behind wouldn't they have recognized him to be a gentleman at once from a greater distance?
The suspense would have been short lived.
