...as I said in my other post in this thread, elsewhere in the story Jane Austen equates 'striking' as being 'tall'.

Also, in Mansfield Park, she describes Fanny as 'She was small of her age, with no glow of complexion, nor any other striking beauty' (so small=not striking).

If you read the passage as Marianne being more striking, then it should also be read as Marianne--the more striking one---being taller.
