I have always read it... Written by BarbaraB (9/15/2009 4:03 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I think Elinor is taller because..., penned by Reeba

...as Elinor being the taller of the two, also. I don't recall ever knowing it could be read as either sister being taller until it was brought up in this thread. I think the way a person's brain chooses to see it the first time they read the sentence is how they will continue to see it unless there is something later in the reading to distinguish which is taller.
