in consequence of the missive, Something wrong from his first visit, penned by Robbin
When it comes to personal information, Willoughby seems to have played it close to the chest until the Dashwoods showed up at Barton and then the information he imparts seems selective and edited to suit his purposes. When Sir John is asked about Willoughby, his infomation is tied to his knowledge of Willoughby in regards to hunting. When Marianne asks for more specific knowledge, "What [are] his pursuits, his talelnts and genius?"
'Sir John was rather puzzled. "Upon my soul," said he, "I donot know much about him as to all that."' Sir John can only add that Willoughby has a pretty little estate in Somersetshire, comes to Devonshire to visit a relative at Allenham which he will inherit, and is apparently indefatigable at dances.
'The Jennings Daily News' has reported little if anything and we know that it is Mrs. Jennings' mission in life to acquire any teensy weensy bit of information that she can about those who come within beathing space of her sphere. She probably employs the following methods: weedling information out of her victims when she can if it is not easily forthcoming, communication through friends and acquaintances by letters/visits/grapevine, and setting spies to work for her. No information from this front makes me think, the Devonshire community doesn't really know much about Willoughby at all execpt what they see, and that, I think, is what he chooses for them to see.
